Editorial Standards

Purpose of the catalogue

The VEQEQ Public Domain Literature Library exists to make public-domain texts more accessible and engaging for contemporary readers. By providing editorial notes, category guides, and reading paths, the catalogue aims to reduce the barrier to entry for works that may feel dated or obscure. The collection is not exhaustive but reflects a personal curation by the catalogue project, VEQEQ Catalogue, with an emphasis on juvenile and general-interest fiction from the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Scope and selection

All 97 books in the library are drawn from Project Gutenberg's corpus of public-domain texts. Selection prioritised works that are complete, have identifiable authors (or known pseudonyms), and offer literary or historical interest. No books were excluded on the basis of controversial content; rather, the catalogue project aimed to represent a range of styles, periods, and moral perspectives common in their era.

Source attribution

Every book page credits Project Gutenberg as the source of the text. Author names, translators, illustrators, and publishers are listed as they appear in the source metadata. The editorial content—catalogue notes, category guides, and this standards document—is original work by VEQEQ Catalogue and is not derived from any third-party summaries or reviews.

Bibliographic records

Each record includes the full title, author(s), subject keywords, target reader, and a catalogue note. Keywords are taken from the original Project Gutenberg metadata and may reflect early 20th-century cataloging practices. The target reader field is standardised to 'Readers of public-domain and historical texts' to indicate the general audience.

Category assignment

Books are organised into four categories based on shared themes, settings, or subject matter. The categories are not mutually exclusive; some works could fit multiple categories. The assignment is intended as a navigation aid, not a definitive literary judgment. Readers are encouraged to browse across categories.

Editorial reading context

The catalogue notes reflect a close reading of excerpts from each work, focusing on narrative voice, pacing, and thematic elements. Notes are not full literary analyses but rather observations that may guide a first reading. the catalogue project has not read every book in its entirety; notes are based on representative passages.

Edition facts and text measurements

All texts are from Project Gutenberg editions, which are based on public-domain sources. No attempt has been made to verify the accuracy of these editions against original printings. Where source text can be measured reliably, word count and estimated reading time may be provided as reading-scope information.

Recommendations and related works

Each category guide includes three recommended titles with brief reasons for inclusion. These recommendations are based on the catalogue grouping criteria of representativeness and interest. No algorithm or external review process is used. Readers may find other works in the catalogue equally rewarding.

Bibliographic dates and catalogue measurements

The catalogue distinguishes the Project Gutenberg digital release from a work’s original or first publication. Project Gutenberg is identified as the digital source for the edition available here; its release year is therefore shown as Gutenberg Release Year, not as the work’s original publication year.

When an explicit first-publication or issue date can be supported directly by the title or issue information, it may be shown separately as First Publication Year. When that date cannot be confirmed, the catalogue displays Not confirmed rather than guessing a year.

Where the source text can be measured reliably, the catalogue may provide word count and estimated reading time. These measurements describe reading scope and are not quality rankings.
